Candidate Job Search Tips

In today’s competitive job market, finding the right opportunity requires more than just firing off resumes. This guide will walk you through a seven-step plan to supercharge your job search, from setting clear goals to leveraging personal networks and optimizing your social media presence. Whether you’re just starting your career or looking for a change, these actionable tips will help you find a job that aligns with your skills, aspirations, and lifestyle

1: Define your goals. What is initiating your job search, what are you seeking in a new opportunity, and what would you like to avoid moving forward? Research job titles as there can be many for a particular career type.

2. Define target employers that meet your goals and desires. Take a targeted and specific approach to your search versus mass applying to positions.

3. Network – there are so many available positions that are not posted on job boards and only networking will make you privy to those opportunities. Let your trusted friends, family members, and professional colleagues know what you’re seeking and ask their help to keep you updated on new opportunities, or to further introduce you with professionals in their extended networks.

4. Ask to be referred- A personal referral usually places candidates in a preferred status in the eye of an employer. In addition, many employers offer referral programs to reward current employees for providing candidate referrals for their open positions.

5. Update your resume being sure to tailor it to each specific position to which you are applying.  Deeply reviewing the job description will be the key here.  Ensure your resume reflects how you meet the job requirements. Be sure to follow up personally after an application to express interest and request a further conversation. Employers want to hire candidates who are truly interested in their opportunity and will go the extra mile to demonstrate their excitement.

6. Ensure your social platforms do not contain unprofessional content or update your privacy settings. Ensure your LinkedIn Profile is optimized with keywords consistent with your desired role and industry so employers seeking your background can locate you.

7. Connect with a local recruiter who has established connections in your industry who can advocate on your behalf and ensure your skills shine in front of hiring authorities. Recruiters many times will suggest resume modifications, and will coach and support you throughout your career change journey.
